It is easy to spot the recognizable style of Judaica artist Lev Shneiderman in this Hamsa shaped bookmark. Lev Shneiderman gives the famous Mediteranian symbol the "Hamsa Hand" a surprisingly delicate elegant look. Etching technique is applied to stainless steel plate to define subtle details, followed by engraving of the design, to produce lace-like Hamsa, with splash of color from Swarovski crystal.

This Hamsa (Chamsa) bookmark is sure to keep the evil eyes and hands of anyone wanting your book.

Made of stainless steel this bookmark is a lovely gift for a special reader!

Measurment: 11 cm / 4.3 in

About the artist: Lev Shneiderman

Lev learned his craftsmanship skills in some of the best schools in the former Soviet Union.

Upon coming to Israel, he yearned to give shape and form to his beliefs and ideals. Lev opened his design studio in Israel’s sparsely populated Negev in 1997. Together with a dedicated team and amidst the hushed desert sands of the Negev, Lev brings his masterful craftsmanship to bear, imbuing his designs with profound artistry, functionality and a touch of mystical inspiration.

Lev’s name means "heart" in Hebrew. How fitting for the individual and the extraordinary collectionthat is the fruit of his labor.

What is the Hamsa (Chamsa) Hand?

The hamsa hand (Arabic) or hamesh hand (Hebrew) is an old and still popular apotropaic amulet for magical protection from the envious or evil eye. The words hamsa and hamesh mean "five" and refer to the digits on the hand. An alternative Islamic name for this charm is the Hand of Fatima, in reference to the daughter of Mohammed. An alternative Jewish name for it is the Hand of Miriam, in reference to the sister of Moses and Aaron.

The Hamsa is used to protect against the evil eye. Therefore it can be found on the doors of homes, in cars, on charm bracelets, necklaces, bookmarks and chains. It may include other protective symbols including eyes, fish (an ancient Jewish symbol) and the Star of David. Many Hamsas are colored light blue or have a light blue gem, as this color is also used to ward off the evil eye.

The Hamsah hand bookmark is a meaningful and wonderful gift for friends and family members who still enjoy reading and holding a proper book before going to sleep :-)

Symbolism and meaning of the Hamsa Hand

Hamsas always have three extended middle fingers, but there is some variation to how the thumb and pinky fingers appear. Sometimes they are curved outwards as in the example shown above, other times they are just significantly shorter than the middle fingers. Whatever their shape, the thumb and pinky finger are always symmetrical.

In addition to being shaped like an oddly formed hand, many hamsas will have an eye displayed in the palm of the hand. The eye is thought to be a powerful talisman against the “evil eye.” The evil eye is a certain “look” that can cause bad luck for the person at whom it is directed. This “look” often originates with a person, though not always intentionally. Legends about the evil eye give both regular people and those with certain powers the ability to cast the evil eye. In the case of the average Joe, envy is most often cited as the unintentional source of the evil eye.
